Buddha (563-483 B.C.)
For fear of causing terror to living beings...let the Bodhisattva who is disciplining himself to attain compassion refrain from eating flesh.
Meat is food for ferocious beasts:
Improper to eat-so said the Buddha.
and:
In future meat eaters, speaking out of ignorance,
Will pretend that the Buddha said,
"It is permissible to eat meat, there is no sin in this."
If, bereft of compassion and wisdom, you eat meat,
You have turned your back on liberation
(in the Lankavatara Sutra)
Jesus (3 A.D.-36 A.D.)
And the flesh of slain beasts in this body will become his own tomb.
For i tell you truly, he who kills, kills himself and whose eats the flesh
of slain beasts eats the body of death.
